Inside Onwrdz

The evolution from Ward Gilbert to Onwrdz — and what comes next.

The evolution from Ward Gilbert to Onwrdz — and what comes next.

Onwrdz is 30 years in the making.

Where it started

Neil Ward went through a leadership development programme in 2008 that changed the trajectory of his career. Working with his mentor Richard Hawkins Adams, he experienced firsthand what happens when someone challenges you to see yourself clearly, develop real gravitas, and lead with intention rather than habit.

That experience stuck. Not as a nice memory or a good story for LinkedIn, but as a practical framework that shaped every leadership role that followed — across online retail, global telecommunications, finance, banking, payments, regtech, and renewables. From FTSE 100 brands to strategic startups. Executive coaching was always at the core of how Neil operated and how he helped the people around him perform.

What it became

In 2016, Neil established NWA — a niche strategic consultancy working with startups, scale-ups, and enterprise businesses globally. The work was initially focused on digital transformation and strategy. But client demand shifted. Leaders didn't just need sharper strategy — they needed to develop themselves.

In response, NWA acquired Gravitas in 2023 — a 30-year-old executive training business with clients across the FTSE 500. Rebranded as Ward Gilbert, the practice went on to coach over 200 executives, working with individuals and teams across product management, engineering, sales, marketing, operations, and finance.

The learning from that body of work was clear: the future would demand even more from leaders. The shift to digital marketplaces had been rapid. What was coming next — AI, structural transformation, the pace of change itself — would be faster still.

Why Onwrdz

The rebrand isn't cosmetic. It reflects a shift in what the business is built to do.

Ward Gilbert was a personal coaching practice, closely tied to Neil's name and reputation. It served its purpose well. But the ambition outgrew the format.

Onwrdz is a platform. The coaching programmes remain the foundation — the work Neil is most passionate about, and the work that drives the most tangible results for clients. But beyond the modular programmes, Onwrdz offers ongoing personal brand and gravitas management, leadership and media coaching with some of the world's leading marketing experts, and continuous mentoring across the course of a career.

The name matters. Onwards — with the deliberate spelling — captures the philosophy: forward movement, progress, ascent. It's a brand that can grow beyond any individual, scale across new services, and maintain its identity as things evolve.

What's next

In 2026, Onwrdz will launch its community — a platform where clients, leaders, and guests share their own coaching and leadership experiences. Not just personal growth, but ongoing brand positioning and peer connection for top talent.

Beyond that, Onwrdz is being built as a platform for broader leadership services — from brand and creative strategy to events, thought leadership, and talent.

The detail will follow. For now, the focus is on moving forwards with gravitas.

Onwrdz.
